Scientists believe that this disease has developed and crossed species to infect humans due to the fact that the cattle in England were fed animal by-products, such as bone meal and brains from cross-specied ruminants, specifically sheep. (Cows are herbivores that do not have a digestive system capable of breaking down and properly absorbing animal proteins!). New Zealand, United States, Argentina, Australia, Denmark, Canada and the Asian continent are considered to be free of BSE due to the fact that animal by-products are not permitted in cattle feed.
