Stress and Immune System

Prolonged stress can cause a variety of disorders and illnesses. It has a big effect on our immune system. When we are under a lot of stress we secrete corticosteroids from the adrenal cortex that actually suppress the immune system.

In the early days of organ transplants, large doses of corticosteroids were given to suppress the immune system and dampen the rejection response.

Stress brings about a drop in the number of lymphocytes (white blood cells) in the body. These white blood cells are important players in the immune system. So, if you can control stress, you can increase your immunity.

During exercise, the level of white blood cells in the blood rises; but don't overdo it, strenuous exercise can temporarily dampen the immune response.

Stress is an excellent example of the mind-body connection. It brings new meaning to the song "Don't worry, he happy” which could double as sound medical advice. Depression is associated with a decrease in immune function, but on the up-side, a positive attitude can contribute to improved immune function.

Stress and Heart Disease

Psychological and mental tension is now recognized as the most important risk factor for coronary heart disease - usually signalized by:

  • elevated triglycerides and low HDL-"good" cholesterol levels
  • high blood pressure and
  • obesity - to name the most common symptoms of the metabolic syndrome X.

With more and more scientific research results pouring in over the last two decades, we have come to know that excessive stress can lead to:

  • increased blood pressure
  • increased heart rate
  • increased concentration of fat (triglycerides) and cholesterol in blood and their deposition in the arteries
  • increased blood sugar
  • increased blood clotting, and
  • spasm of coronary artery and other arteries.

This means that stress is such an influential risk factor that even in the absence of other risk factors it can itself become responsible for coronary heart disease.

It is not uncommon to see people with normal cholesterol, not overweight, without family history of heart disease and without high blood pressure who develop angina -- only because of prolonged excessive mental or psychological stress.

New findings reveal that people who report more everyday happiness are healthier overall than their less joyous counterparts in a number of key ways. In particular, happy men experience lower heart rates throughout the day, indicating good cardiovascular health.

People who feel happier more often also have on average lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which is linked with hypertension and type II diabetes, than do people who recount fewer moments of happiness.

In addition, content people perform better under stressful conditions and, therefore, exhibit lower levels of a blood protein call fibrinogen, which at high levels can indicate potential cardiovascular problems (Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences 2005: April).

The problem with stress, however, is that there are no means of measuring it even with the latest scientific gadgets. There are no "units," such as ml, mm, kg, etc., to define it.

Therefore, the modern science and cardiologists have specifically abstained from talking about the role of stress in developing heart disease and other cardiovascular health problems.

Stress and Triglycerides

During stress fat is not being metabolized as rapidly and efficiently.
It has been known for a long time that prolonged stress plays a major role in increasing the blood levels of triglycerides.

A new study has found the evidence that psychological, mental stress causes triglycerides to stay in the bloodstream longer contributing to cardiovascular health problems (Psychophysiology, 2002: 39; 80-85).

Unfortunately, with regards to elevated blood lipids (fats) the stress factor has been repeatedly underestimated both by doctors and their patients.

While we may not be able to control the hand we’re dealt, we do have a say on how we play our hand.

There are many strategies on playing the cards of life in ways that can reduce or eliminate the harmful effects of stress. For example, the stress factor can be eased and put to good use through physical exercise, music or even a proper diet.

Without any doubt emotional, mental and spiritual health is absolutely essential to our physical health, well-being and healing.

What About Depression?

Depression works on your body in different ways than stress, but the results are the same. You can be struck practically at any age with:

  • feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, helplessness, total indifference and/or extreme guilt
  • prolonged sadness; unexplained crying spells
  • jumpiness or irritability
  • withdrawal from formerly enjoyable activities or relationships
  • inability to concentrate or remember details; indecisiveness
  • noticeable change in appetite with sudden weight loss or gain
  • changes in sleep patterns: constant fatigue, insomnia, early waking, oversleeping
  • physical ailments that cannot be explained otherwise
  • thoughts of death or suicide attempts.

  • Meditation. If nothing else, just try watching your breath. Sit down. Keep your back straight. Close your eyes and watch your breath. Watch as your breath goes in and your lungs fill. Watch as it goes out and your lungs empty. Don't force; just watch.
  • Visualization. After you've meditated for a few minutes and calmed down, practice a visualization. See your body as made of healing light. Imagine the light penetrating and healing every cell in your body. If you are sick, focus the light on the diseased area.
  • Positive affirmations. What we say matters. Try repeating to yourself over and over with each step you take when you walk, or while you're driving something like: "I'm joy. I'm peace. I'm health. I'm light." Or make up your own. If so, make it short and rhythmical, so it sort of says itself to a walking cadence. It really does work magic.
  • Herbal nerve-tonic formulations. They usally contain such herbs as Valerian Root, Kava kava, Passionflower, Hops, Black cohosh, St. John's wort, and Lobelia.
